Culturally Responsive Literature in the Classroom
Funded Jan 28, 2022Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. Being able to read novels is a key part of growing a love for reading and building reading and analytical skills for students. Without your support I would not have class sets of novels in my class. Additionally, many of the stories in the textbook do not represent the diverse cultural experience of students in my classroom. Being able to have culturally relevant texts affirms to my students that their experiences and cultural backgrounds matter.
In my classroom, we enjoyed reading "Born A Crime" together daily. Reading aloud daily supports building oral fluency and vocabulary. Many of my students are reading below grade level and having high level, complex texts in front of all of my students have allowed some students to grow two grade levels in reading in just one year.
When asking my students about their opinions of "Born A Crime", one of my students wrote, "I enjoyed this novel because it was one of the first books that felt like it was for me and I had a deep connection to it." This exemplifies the impact that your donation had on my classroom. Thank you so much for helping my students come academically alive in my classroom through reading.”

An Engaging, Diverse Classroom Library for My Students!
Funded Jun 21, 2022Your support means so much. My students will now have a classroom library where they can check out high interest books and build a love for reading. Independent reading is key to growing a love for reading and helping students read on grade level. Being able to have enough books to support independent reading means so much. Without your support there is no way that I could have ever made this happen in my classroom. Thank you so much!”

Funded Aug 25, 2020Thank you so much for your generous donation to my classroom. Having materials and books to create remote learning kits allowed my students to continue to read novels while we were virtual. This matters because in a classroom where many of my students already read below grade level, having access to high quality texts while virtual helped to keep students engaged and growing as readers. With your generous donation I was able to pack up student materials in a convenient package to be picked up at school or dropped off to students.
Because each student had a copy of the novel at home, we were able to read novels throughout virtual instruction. Students also worked on annotating while reading with the post-it notes that were donated as well. When asking my students about their opinion of the novel "Piecing Me Together," one of my students wrote, "I enjoyed this novel because it was one of the first books that felt like it was for me and I had a deep connection to it." This exemplifies the impact that your donation had on my classroom. Thank you so much for helping my students come academically alive in my classroom through reading.”
