  • Chromebook Collaboration to Spark Creative Questioning

    Funded Jan 12, 2017

The addition of 5 Samsung Chromebooks to our classroom has been very important. Groups can access their Google accounts on a regular basis. They collaborate when both note taking and planning the presentation of their completed work. It has also helped the students with our Green roof project to research topics such as transpiration, green roof technology, storm water run off, and other information related to our engineering challenge of designing a green roof. We attended the NYC Science Expo to present our projects and each student received a medal and a certificate of participation. They were so incredibly proud. We couldn't have done this without the Chromebooks.

Each child has said that working on the new Chromebooks has helped them search for information faster on the internet. It has given them access to websites that are important for instruction as well as enrichment, such as accessing on-line book & video resources for their research. For example, they can read science and social studies books on Myon, watch a video on Brain-pop, then shift to taking notes collaboratively in Google Classroom. I can post readings for them that they can access through Classroom, and they can use these posts to comment constructively on each others work .

Overall, the addition of this technology in our classroom has helped all the students throughout each day have access to important resources.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Grant

  • Building Big Ideas Through Funtastic Fantasy Reading

    Funded Sep 29, 2015

My students have been reading the fantasy books your donation has made possible. Some of my students can be reluctant readers and these types of books are inspiring them to read more often. For other students, the work of explaining theme can be challenging. When books are engaging like these, the students want to do this difficult work. They read closer, they want to notice to small changes characters progress through, and they write more specifically.

Since they know J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan are well known, they ponder author's craft with more respect for what it is. They see the author as an person, not just a name behind the book. Understanding the decisions and literary devices an author makes to put forth the ideas within a novel has been challenging for some of the students, however these novels make this work easier for them.

The challenges these characters face are about growing up and learning more about themselves. What the characters know and do not know and how this impacts the story has been a big topic in the student's conversations. Again, enjoying these books themselves helps the students have deeper, longer conversations about them.

Overall, the entire classroom has enjoyed these books. I have uploaded a few pictures of a group of students who have been meeting during independent reading to share their thinking. Some of their envisioning of a scene of their choice is included. They discussed why those scenes were important, and what it revealed about the characters.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Grant

My students are a diverse group of creative learners who are part of a very large school in need of additional funding. They love to learn in all subjects, but our school is struggling to supply the needed tools to help them to inquire "What if? How? Why?" as readers, writers, mathematicians, researchers, builders, designers, and explorers. These questions are the root of their journey as life long inspired learners. I am dedicated to their growth as both independent and collaborative learners, but this requires having a variety of resources throughout the year.
