    My students have absolutely loved having a cup of tea or hot cocoa while we read, especially on chilly mornings. On mornings when we enjoyed our tea, students said this was why they loved coming to class—it was welcoming and cozy, and they learned a lot.

    Seeing students enjoy reading with their tea or cocoa has been a treat. It has created a sense of community and made students enjoy reading a little more.

  • Hands-On: Art Supplies Needed

    Thank you so much for funding this project!

    Students in my new Mixed-Media art class have loved using the supplies to make their creations. We recently finished a project using the tempra paint sticks funded to create hearts inspired by Brazilian artist Romero Britto. Being able to paint in class without making a mess was a great bonus to the fun students had with these supplies. We also are in the midst of working on a project inspired by Wassily Kandinsky's Concentric Circles, but using hearts instead. Watching students choose their colors and arrange the pieces of paper just so has been such a joy.

The majority of my students qualify for the free-reduced lunch program and getting them to provide even the most basic of school supplies for themselves is challenging. The few students who do have access to technology, barely know how to conduct a Google search or how to use spell check in Microsoft Word. It is sad that for some students, double spacing an essay means hitting the space bar twice after each word.

About my class

The majority of my students qualify for the free-reduced lunch program and getting them to provide even the most basic of school supplies for themselves is challenging. The few students who do have access to technology, barely know how to conduct a Google search or how to use spell check in Microsoft Word. It is sad that for some students, double spacing an essay means hitting the space bar twice after each word.
