My students are mostly immigrants and first-generation Americans; by 6th grade, a good number have already surpassed the education level of their parents. As English learners, most feel more confident as students of math than of language arts, a positive learning attitude I work feverishly to maintain. In general, my students have strong spatial-visual abilities, and I try to make each new concept as visual as possible to help them understand quickly. Once they can mentally "see" the structure of a certain type of problem, they move forward with greater accuracy and confidence in problem solving.
