  • Project Based Learning - Innovation Through Crafting: Sewing Space

    Funded Dec 5, 2024

Thank you for helping us get our materials to have a successful year with our Robotics team. Outfitting out Spirit room with tools and equipment to sew our projects will help our team with the "artsy" side of Robotics. Right now our students are learning how to piece a pattern together and cut - with these new machines, notions, and equipment, they will be able to make their crafty projects look professional and finished. Thank you for all your support.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De La Rosa

  • Marketing our Innovations, Showcasing our Creativity

    Funded Sep 16, 2024

Thank you for providing the merchandise for our Senior class and Robotics teams. With your generous donations, we have been able to support our teams, clubs, projects, and seniors. We have been crafting and learning new skills about graphic design and layout.

The learning curve is a real thing. With your donations, we've been able to experiment with sticker making, logo design, t shirt making and best of all, project refinement. Because of the donation, our title 1 students can make, refine if needed, and then create - without having to finance their equipment and materials on their own.

Thank you for your time and generosity.”

  • Make Our Maker Space Crafty!

    Funded Sep 10, 2024

The crafting items we bought have revolutionized our Robotics Spirit space. We've been able to utilize our tools in ways that enhance our creativity.

Being able to create merchandise that is custom has allowed our team to make stickers, shirts, and posters - really anything their hearts desire that they can create, we can now make.

Having the stock on hand to create custom hats, cups, decals and logos will impact our future branding and allow us to shine

Thank you for your generosity and attention to our project”

  • Diverse Texts for Diverse Students

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

Thank you for contributing to my project to purchase Homegoing for my students. This tale of the journey through the middle passage to college success is one of hope and resilience for our students.

The students in AP Literature will be able to compare and contrast this texts with historical texts written along similar lines. The lessons that we learn from the characters in this text will resound with our students forever and always.

Thank you for your generous donation and for giving of yourself and your time to this project. You are amazing to gift our students with literature.”

  • Helping Those Who Helped Us

    Funded Oct 14, 2021

Kite Runner was an eye-opening travel through the war-torn eyes of our Protagonist's country, Amir. Through his eyes we saw ourselves and our own short comings. We argued about how we treat ourselves and others. We reflected on redemption.

In our current mid-pandemic educational world, we need these lessons, these stories, to bring us together. The timeliness of this books to our current times allowed students to become more curious about the politics of our own world.

Our students, aspiring engineers, are so thoughtful and creative with their left brain. Through storytelling, observing relationships and personal growth, they too are learning the cautionary tale from Amir. Take care of those who love you most, value what you have, time is fleeting.

Thank you again for your donation. The senior class of 2022 is forever changed by this book.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De La Rosa

  • Some Fuel for Thought: A Book for PBL Cross-Curricular Project

    Funded Oct 30, 2019

American War is a post-apocalyptic novel that brings home the theme of what will happen if we DON'T fix our wasteful ways. A response to a gradually warming planet that is tenuous in its fragile borders, American War is heralds a warning for our students that they must do better.

In our cross-curricular PBL school we team Chemistry-English III-Environmental Sustainability, and US History together. This novel explores all them. For Chemistry, we will read about the mixtures that they have to make to sustain life. For US History, we can explore the pseudo-primary source documents to see how the characters formed their new nation. For Environmental sustainability, we can explore what happens in a world where fossil fuels are illegal and global warming is a reality.

These studies will be perfect for our inner city students who have very limited aspects on a primitive lifestyle. They will be able to see their studies in action through our studies of this book and the characters lives.”

  • Coastal Contamination! Addressing Water Crisis in Cross-Curicular STEM Project

    Funded Aug 21, 2019

The Story of Stuff is going to help our students understand how their "stuff" contributes to the potential for real damage to our planet. By looking at the "Story of Stuff" and applying these lessons in their real lives, they can save our planet. Our cohort of English III, AP US History, Chemistry, and Environmental Sustainability is working, in a Project Based Learning School, on a project that will addresses Coastal Contamination. Students will respond to the driving question: "How can we as environmental stewards address coastal contamination to ensure sustainable settlements." They will use lessons from Story of Stuff to address this question, research the problem, and create a solution. Students will present their solutions at our exhibition entitled, "The Clean Water Conference."

Reading looks many ways in my classroom. One day, like today we use SSR, or sustained silent reading. Another day, we will popcorn read. Some days, we will ponder quotes from the text out of context. Often we will write personal responses. All the time, we will question, we will ponder, and we will create new meaning from the lessons we learn. My students are truly enjoying the process.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De La Rosa

In our combined US History - Engineering - Chemistry - English III blended learning STEM-based Cohort, our Title-One students are tackling real-world problems in a Project Based Learning Model. Our school follows a "one room schoolhouse" model, with AP, prep, and ESL students all sharing the same classroom. Rigorous reading is a key component to getting our inner-city students to close academic gaps. Reading authentic, real-world scientific case studies will push them to see the connections between our four courses. Using a book that has authentic connections to their own community, state, and region will make our learning timely, personalized, and important.
