I work with student with special needs in a community where most students receive free or reduced lunch. My students work hard to improve themselves each day and are asked to find pathways to success through independence and advocacy. I work to encourage my students to speak up for themselves and their needs. This includes asking for a pencil when they need it or letting a teacher know that they can't see the board from the right side of the room. I also try to develop independence by helping them find a way to do things that works for them. For some students this means color coding all their classes and materials, while for others it may mean that laying on the floor helps them concentrate while they read. My goal is for my students to be independent learners with the skills they need to be successful both in and out of school.
