Beloved was the first book I read that made me truly appreciate and love literature; now that I am teaching older students who can grapple with such a dense text, I want to bring my favorite book to my students. Beloved is a classic and I believe everyone should read it. It has rich figurative language, important themes, hard questions, and Toni Morrison is simply one of the best authors of our time. In my classroom, we focus on discussion and social justice. With my juniors, I want to focus our writing on tightly-focused personal narratives to mimic the writing that students will have to do (scholarships, college essays, even cover letters). Beloved has so many jumping-off points and different stories that provide a rich foundation for student work and thought.
