In my classroom students spend time working in groups around a collaborative whiteboard space on the wall. This allows students to easily glance around the room to see other groups’ work and helps to support struggling students.
Large whiteboards allow collaborative student groups to better use color to organize their brainstorming when solving real world math problems. A color printer provides engaging anchor charts with key math concepts to help focus student thinking when trying to solve problems.
Collaborative brainstorming on the wall before individual practice allows students to more deeply explore a concept and understand it in a low stakes environment. This method also allows students to engage in the material in whatever level they are at. As a teacher, I can more quickly glance at student work and see where support is needed.
