In order to keep them motivated to read for longer periods of time, I would love to offer my scholars flexible seating in my classroom, so they can choose the seating that best works for them! We discuss daily how our work in the classroom today is essential to achieving their dreams in the future, and they know that a key part of being successful is being an avid reader. They are falling in love with reading right before my eyes, and I want to continue to keep my scholars engaged and motivated to build their literacy skills. This year my students have made a half of year of growth in their reading level in only six weeks! We began the Accelerated Reader program, and my students are so excited to earn points for prizes, but more than that they are learning to get lost in the world of literature.
We have 50 minutes a day of independent reading time, and my scholars love to read around the room. When they do this they choose different pillows I have purchased and find a comfy place in the room to sit and enjoy their book. Through this project, I have asked for a myriad of seating options. First, rocker chairs, wobble chairs, and balance balls will help my more active scholars remain engaged in reading, while still being able to keep their bodies moving. I have also asked for bean bag chairs, yoga mats, floor seats, and pillows for my scholars who prefer to stay still, but would like a more comfortable option than the standard desk chair. I would love to diversify their seating options to ensure that each of my scholars is comfortable and truly enjoys everything about the experience of reading.
