Due to systematic conditions in the area, my students feel out of touch with history. Whether it's feeling disconnected to the history of the US because of the country's inception years ago, or inability to understand the complicated history of their ancestral roots throughout time, it's been a challenge to teach history with a modern twist. Being in a community that is impacted by so many conditions, our students are often skeptical of learning material that does not reflect their lives and histories. Through engaging with modern media and alternative methods of learning, students feel the power and agency to make the material presented to them through their textbooks relevant and meaningful to them. Through a novel approach, I hope to introduce American History and Ethnic Studies in a way that will encourage students to engage with the decisions made by past historical actors that affect the way they live their lives now. My aim is to get students curious and invested in their history classes to that they feel educated and empowered to become active members of society to bring about the change they so desperately wish to see in their community, and the world as a whole.
