PreK and Kindergarteners deserve to have their artwork emphasized and viewed by all. Although they are at the beginning stages of visual art, they are determined learners who remind me that there is still a little kid in all of us.
For their first project, I introduced them to self portraits and we went over all the different shapes that make up our faces. We crushed that common misconception they come in with that there are legs and arms coming out of our heads and focused on the essential features including eyes, ears, eyebrows, eyelashes, eyes, nose, mouth, and hair. Their drawings came out so incredible that I know they will be even more impressive enlarged up to 7x the size they are now.
Then they will use tempera cakes which are easy to manage and use for both the students and myself since I am on a cart and only have 35 minutes with them. They will paint their large-scale self portraits and begin learning about color mixing.
