A major focus for students at our school this year is to improve students' reading and writing skills through embedding literacy components in all subjects. Interactive notebooks will encourage student engagement during note taking sessions, increase students' vocabulary, and make learning both math and language skills fun. They will also increase students' ability to outline key ideas and explain their answers for constructed response items.
Students will be provided these notebooks at the start of the year, and with the colorful paper and art supplies, students will create flipbooks, foldables, and outlines of key ideas to organize the information they are learning. Students will be able to easily access notes during their independent work time and during small group instruction. Utilizing and referring back to notes that provide easy to understand explanations and examples will enhance students' understaning of math concepts and their vocabulary skills. Interactive notbooks will be incredibly helpful to English language learners and special education students in my class as the organization they provide makes new information easier to process.
Additionally, white board markers will be used with personal white boards for practice math problems, white board races, quick displays of checks for understanding, and ultimately allow for less wasted paper and notebook space. Students will also be provided folders to organize data trackers, which will help students identify which concepts they have mastered as well as which they need additional support. Students will have access to other basic supplies such as pencils, scissors, glue, a pencil sharpener, and tissues on a daily basis. Some of the colorful paper will be used to make anchor charts and bulletin boards to brighten up students' learning environment.
