Through your support; 8th Grade students will build a ukulele from a kit, personalize it, and learn a song or two. We piloted the ukulele building with one 8th Grade class and purchased 16 ukuleles. This class has been a great success and the rest of my 8th Grade STEAM students really hope to make a ukulele too. Over the course of the unit students will need to measure and follow directions as well as learn how to use various tools, stains, paints, and practice problem-solving situations as they present themselves. I have students stopping by to ask if they can work on the extra time and other students excited for the day that they have STEAM. Building the ukuleles themselves motivates the students to want to learn to play. It also fosters creativity in the classroom and a sense of confidence while learning a variety of new skills. They are so proud of the final product and what they have done. Many of my students may not be able to afford a ukulele or lessons, but we can learn songs in class and it also creates a new healthy and lifelong habit.
