I teach at a selective-enrollment high school on the south side of Chicago. This is a special school with hard-working and curious students almost all of which are college-bound. Approximately 80% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-lunches, and 98% of our students are African-American or Latino. "Our mission is to empower students to become independent thinkers in a collaborative learning environment. We will nurture each student contribution to local and global communities by promoting personal responsibility, service, and intellectual and social growth." My students live up to this mission each and everyday- working together, learning from one another, and growing as scholars and thoughtful and caring human beings. Because we have 100 minutes together twice a week, we are lucky enough have the time for in-depth discussion, inquiry, and problem-solving where both the students and I feel challenged
