My classroom is is filled with a diverse group of amazing scholars. with students coming from immigrant, African American, and Hispanic backgrounds.
My classroom not only needs but deserves stories, picture books, non-fiction selections, and all kinds of other texts that reflect their cultures, ethnicity, and personal interest. The majority of our classroom With authors like Jaqueline Woodson, Jason Reynolds, and non-fiction text educating scholars about Barack Obama, Frida Kahlo, Harriet Tubman, and other great diverse leaders of our history, my students will be exposed to rich texts helping them them into the life long readers they are truly capable of becoming.
My students are active and extraordinary. They learn best through artistic experiences, real life learning, and individualized projects. Having tools like markers, crayons, and colored pencils will help their projects come to life. Students will use these tools in their literature groups, novel projects, and self designed learning opportunities.
Students who enter my room come in with stressors of worrying where food is coming from on a daily basis. Often my students are coming into school not having had dinner or are unsure of when their next meal will happen at home. Having extra snacks, like fruit snacks, Chex mix, and crackers will give them that energy needed to be successful in the classroom or to be sent home with. With standardized and district testing, having a small treat like a tootsie roll or a sucker can sometimes be a huge motivator with thrive off of encouragement. These snacks and treats will help my scholars stay engaged in learning, as well as relieve their stressor over having enough food during the day.
