Graphic Novels for English Learners
Funded May 3, 2022Thank you so much for donating to my classroom! I have been trying to get more comic novels for my students because I know how much they love them. Nothing gets them more engaged in reading than having a great story and amazing illustrations.
The comic books that I selected were able to fill in multiple gaps in our classroom library aside from just being comic novels. A lot of them were also chosen because they highlight the experience of Asian Americans, something I have been trying to do for a while as we have many Asian American students. They, just like the rest of my students, deserved to be represented in our literature.
The books were a great hit! Cannot wait to see how much my next groups of students enjoy them as well.”

Funded Dec 13, 2017Thank you so much for choosing my project for your monthly funding pick! My students, and my classroom partner's students, have thoroughly been enjoying using the new books we received with your help.
My students really benefit from small group activities and Guided Reading. I currently do not have a leveled library or something similar in order to provide students with high quality reading material that is both engaging and on a level they can read. My students are all English Learners, most have less than 1 year in the country, at most 2 years in the country. The only students have more than 2 year in my classroom also receive Special Education services along with ESOL services. In general my class really needs materials that lends itself for differentiated instruction.
These new books have been great for just that. They have great vocabulary that utilizes a lot of pictures, which is great for my ESOL students. My kids loves the high quality pictures that this line of books use throughout their leveled series. My old book series were extremely dull, not only in content but also in appearance. They don't make reading exciting for them, something that I really wants my students to feel as they learn to read in a new language.
Thank you so much! On behalf of me and my students!”

Ms. Rosales
