  • Sit, Stay, Learn: Ball Chairs for Our Special Ed Class!

    Funded Jul 3, 2014

Our therapeutic ball chairs are AWESOME! My classroom assistants and myself spent an afternoon assembling these chairs and were so excited to let our students experience them. I can already tell what a huge difference they are going to make over time in our classroom. Many of my students have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, sensory integration challenges, and/or WAY too much energy! This creates a struggle in focusing and attending across the school day. These chairs give my students the opportunity to move, wiggle, and receive sensory input in an appropriate way. What a HUGE gift you have given us! Thank you for believing in our classroom.”

  • Making Literature Come to Life in Our Special Ed Class!

    Funded Mar 25, 2014

Thank you so, so, much for your generous donation to our classroom. The portable CD players, headphones, and books on CD have been so fun for my students. Many of my students have intellectual disabilities that hinder them from learning at the same pace as their same age peers. Due to this, I have students that are not yet reading and students reading at much lower levels than their peers. These books on CD have been so much fun for them! They love engaging with books and learning more about text from these fun materials. So many schools and deserving students would go without if it wasn't for donors like YOU! A million and one thanks from our classroom!”

  • Getting Active: Yoga for our Special Education Class!

    Funded Feb 4, 2014

My students were so floored by our new yoga mats and yoga materials. "What is yoga?" "Can I take a nap?" They had never been exposed to this type of fitness before! We started by taking off our shoes and each getting a mat. They learned how to unroll the mat and find enough space to move their bodies. My students struggle with gross motor skills and imitation, so yoga is perfect to target these important and needed skills! They follow my instructions or the instructions on the yoga DVD. It is such a great way to get them moving while not getting them TOO rowdy! Thank you so much for your generosity and heart to help my seven little students. You are amazing!”

  • Help Us Focus: Room Dividers for a Special Ed Classroom!

    Funded Mar 11, 2014

Wow - you would not believe how useful our new room dividers have been! From off task students to temper tantrums, these dividers have been life savers. Being able to visually and literally divide up our classroom with the use of kid friendly room dividers has been so nice. My students are usually so distracted by the direct instruction groups I have going on in the back of the classroom when the rest of my students are doing independent work. Now, I have a room divider that visually blocks off this area, so my students aren't distracted by us. My students really need unique tools to learn best, and your generosity has helped make this possible. Thank you a million and one times.”

  • Math: Making it Functional for Our Special Ed Classroom!

    Funded Mar 17, 2014

You would not believe the amount of use we have already gotten out of our new math materials! It was like Christmas day when our boxes were wheeled in by our trusty custodian. My students really need highly engaging materials to stay on task, and these materials are already hitting the spot. My students especially love the "Count My Cookies Jar", a talking cookie jar that quizzes my students on number identification. The math file folder set is so useful, and it targets skills that meet the needs of my wide range of learners. What a breath of fresh air to not have to make all of these tasks by hand. I would never have this luxury, or these engaging and fun materials for my students to learn with, without your incredible generosity. Thank you a million and one times.”

  • Kids with Intellectual Disabilities Can Read? You Bet!

    Funded Dec 27, 2013

Hello! Thank you, thank you, THANK you again (and again!) for your generous donation to our little classroom. The First Little Reader books have been such a blessing for our classroom. My students love having books with repetitive patterns and helpful illustrations so they can read more independently. We would have never had the means to gain these books without donors like you. We use these books everyday for guided reading, and students can bring them home as a part of a school wide reading challenge program. A million and one thanks from us to YOU!”

  • Our Special Education Class Needs The Basics

    Funded Jan 19, 2014

The materials that you helped us to obtain have already made such a difference. We have already used ALL the Velcro that we received on creating adapted books for our classroom! Many of my students cannot read (yet), and attaching velcro to books allows my students to still participate in reading. I create picture cue that match the illustrations on each page, and affix velcro to the pages and picture cues. The students match the pictures to the correct page. The scented playdough has also been a huge hit. The materials you funded would never have been accessed by us without your generosity. We are so thankful!”

  • A Cozy Classroom Rug for a Special Class!

    Funded Dec 18, 2013

Hello! Count this as a small token of our gratitude for your generous donation to our class. Our new classroom rug has been such a blessing. We gather on this rug 4 times per day as a class for quiet reading, calendar time, math circle time, and goodbye time. When our class finishes work, they gather on our new, cozy rug to play with toys as a reward. Without this rug, our classroom would not feel as homey, comfortable and inviting as it does now. My students treasure this part of our classroom. A million thank yous from us to you!”

Our school is a therapeutic day school program whose task is to provide emotional support and academic opportunities to children who have been unable to succeed in community school settings due to emotional, learning, and behavioral difficulties. The majority of our students live at a residential children's home and are wards of the state. Our school runs as a trauma-informed program, aiming to help our students grow from their pasts and learn how to cope in effective ways. Despite the challenges that our students face, they are incredible children. Their resiliency, love for learning, and curiosity are truly inspiring. I strive to make my classroom a welcoming and safe community and to help my students explore learning and grow into independent and productive citizens.
