I teach Transitional Kindergarten at an Elementary School Southern California. Many of my students come from low-income families. 100% of the students qualify for free school meals and our school is 100% title 1. The majority of my students come from Latino households where Spanish is their primary language.
All of my students turn 5 years old between September or December. They are considered the youngest of the kindergartners. They also need to acquire rich academic vocabulary to be successful in school.
For many of my students this is their first schooling experience. They are beginning to learn the routines of the classroom and school. They come to school ready to learn and excited to see what new activities and songs they will be learning for the day. Their families are very supportive of their learning and try to volunteer. I want to show them to love coming to school and that learning can be fun!
