All of our students deserve a safe and comfortable classroom that promotes learning and a sense of belonging. My kindergartners are young students that need designated areas in the classroom that will help them understand when and where some of the learning will take place. Our first classroom carpet will help create a fun and comfortable physical space for my kindergartners to sit while they listen to read-alouds and discuss reading and math. It will also allow my students to get an up-close instruction, and feel part of our classroom community as they listen, participate and share knowledge with one another. Having a classroom carpet keeps the novelty of seeing the room in different ways for my kindergartners; of moving through the room and sitting on the floor, rather than at a desk. Movement in the classroom will help my students be engaged and retain more information. When my students move to the carpet, they will receive 10-15 minutes of instruction, move around the room for learning activities, come back to discuss the learning, and complete independent work. The carpet will be a place for fun and cooperative learning activities, time for discussions, and a comfortable place for independent reading. It will also be large enough to give each student an assigned spot. Most of all, it will help create a sense of community in the classroom, where I can interact with my students and them with each other in a respectful and engaging way.
