  • How a ConvertaBench Can Convert Our Classroom!

    Funded Apr 25, 2019

Time and time again, I keep thinking that I can't get any more grateful for my donors. However, the feeling only gets greater after each donation we receive! We are loving our Convertabench and as you can see from the student's reactions and smiles, they are enjoying every second.

Seeing their faces after I converted the table to a bench and vice versa made this process even more worth it! This has provided additional space and seating in the classroom, along with classroom responsibilities. They treat the Convertabench as if it were precious gold and it makes my teacher heart so happy.

It has also helped my students work together better in small groups and as partners. They respect each others space and enjoy completing activities at the bench. We use the bench(es) for small group, one on one, partner and seating in the classroom.

My students suggested that we use the Convertabench to create a lunch bunch with me. They would like to earn their reward to eat lunch with me and two other friends of choice. I feel this is another great way to utilize the Convertabench.

Thank you again for your generosity towards our classroom. My students and I are eternally grateful and can't wait for you all to receive your cards. My students worked very hard to make them meaningful and personal to their learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simmons

  • The Power of Reading!

    Funded Sep 27, 2018

All of my projects thus far, have been Action Based. After reflecting on my student and schools' overall needs, I knew that creating a Literacy project is exactly what I needed to do! Donors Choose has helped my classroom in so many ways and I can never thank all of my donors enough. Seeing my students with disabilities pick up books and read for sustained amounts of time with confidence makes my teacher heart burst from happiness!! In the pictures you can clearly see the enjoyment and excitement on their faces, especially the one student who I chose to let open the package. I have never seen a kid so excited over books, pens and journals in my life. He doesn't come from much and you would think I gave him the world!!! For my next project, I would love to go big with a school wide literacy project! Thank you all again for making my kids smile each and every day!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simmons

  • Flexing Classroom Space Like We Flex Our Brain Muscles!

    Funded Aug 15, 2018

There is no better feeling than seeing your students walk in on the first day of school light up with excitement!! My students were eager to try our new balance seats and are extremely grateful. In my mind, I knew which students these were "perfect" for but, little did I know just how perfect they were for ALL of my students. Even though I only have 3 in my classroom, my students are respectful and use the equipment responsibly.

It also fits in perfectly in my Action Based Learning classroom and keeps the students' brains engaged and awake constantly throughout instruction. I have now added the balance seats as another flexible seating option to my daily rotations. This is just the beginning of our Action Based Learning journey and we are eternally grateful for your abundance of generosity towards our classroom. Your contributions have kept my students actively ready to learn! Thank you from the bottom of all our Tiger Cub hearts!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simmons

  • Stand Up for Special Education!

    Funded Feb 2, 2018

It is because of you that my students have "more room for learning!" My students were beyond excited and have truly enjoy and value the wireless keyboards and stand up desks! When I told them we were to thank the donors, they went as far as asking if they could take a field trip to thank you all! You can only imagine how that made this teacher feel!!

Some amazing statements made by my students were:

"Stand up desks help me stay focused and wake up my brain to help me learn." -5th grade boy

"I like the wireless keyboards, mouse and stand up desks because, the cords don't get in my way and it gives me room to work. I like the desks because, I work best when standing up and it keeps me focused." 5th grade girl

"I wish we could have stand up desks in every room because, that's how I learn best!"- 4th grade boy

"Thank you for donating Donors Choose!! I love the wireless keyboard and mouse because, you don't have the wires in the way. You can put the keyboard in a position that is comfortable! I also like the stand up desks because, it wakes me up in class." 5th grade boy

"Thank you Donors Choose for donating to us. Thank you guys for the stand up desks and thank you for giving us all of the cool stuff for our computers." 5th grade boy

"I like the stand up desks because, it helps me focus and can make you feel comfortable. I love the wireless computer keyboards and mouse because, it's more easier to move around and wires are not in the way." 5th grade girl

What motivated me to start this project is Action Based Learning. I want to provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment that nurtured the needs of my students. A lot of my students learn best when given flexible seating and require movement and breaks throughout to keep their brains awake and ready to learn. The stand up desks and wireless boards/mice were exactly what they needed.

Action based learning has helped my room immensely and this equipment was a great start to providing my students with the room for learning that they and every student deserves. Thank you donors from the bottom of all of our hearts! We are eternally grateful!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Simmons

This classroom project was brought to life by The First Million Fund and 2 other donors.
The students that I teach range from 3rd-5th grade and different disabilities. With that being said, they're also much larger than students I've taught in the past. This requires my classroom to provide more space for learning. By having stand up desks in my classroom, my students will not only have more room but they will also be able to focus more. I have students that learn best when standing up. Personally, this has never bothered me because, it's part of their disability to have difficulty to sit still for sustained amount of time. When the student is given a choice to stand in an area that doesn't impede on the learning of others, motivation to learn and keep that privilege is increased. Students in my classroom also don't have as much room to type when working on the computers, due to limited space. By providing wireless keyboards and mouse, space will be freed up and the students can remain focused on the task given. If these materials are funded, my students and I would be eternally grateful for the new seating options, space and the fact that someone cared enough to stand up for their individual needs in the classroom.
