  • Books for All Kids to Be "On the Come Up"

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

Reading "On the Come Up" showed students that there is a whole world of books that relates to them and their world. Many of my students have disengaged with reading because it never really seemed to relate to them. In this book, the young Black female protagonist comes from poverty and a troubled family, but her struggles are a part of who she is and the success she will achieve. Seeing different parts of their identify in this bold protagonist was not only exciting for students but also helped them to dream about their own future.

This has become one of those books that some students DON'T return, and that is okay! They read the whole book and want to keep it, share it, reread it. That sort of love for reading can change students lives, and I'm so grateful for the opportunity you helped support to allow my students to each have their own physical book. Thank you again for helping make reading a reality in my classroom!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weiss

  • "Dear Martin" Encourages Civic Action through Powerful and Engaging Literature

    Funded Sep 10, 2020

This book has been a major engagement tool and has had a real benefit for all students in my class. Almost every student, upon reflection of the trimester, found connection between the racism and mistreatment by police and either their own life experiences or current news events. The book was a gateway for many of my students to process their own experiences of loss and trauma and to ask of themselves the same question that Justyce asks throughout the book, "Even if the world doesn't see me the way I see me, who am I going to chose to be?"

Thank you so much for your generosity that contributed so strongly to increased engagement in reading and in online learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weiss

  • Philly Audio Diaries Needs to Be Heard

    Funded Oct 20, 2018

Your generosity helped us finish a successful Podcast workshop and launch into our next podcast project!

Jadiyyah is in the midst of producing a longer form story that will be aired on local radio stations, our professional reporter support, Anne, has opened up office spaces to mentor Podcast interns, and I am able to continue incorporating voice recording into my writing classes. The addition of the voice recorders has opened up so many opportunities for us.

Students voices at El Centro de Estudiantes are powerful and your gift has helped them have the tools they need to share their stories. From the bottom of all of our hearts, thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weiss

  • Learning With Autism: A Safe Place To Grow

    Funded Dec 1, 2015

Thank you all for donating to my classroom! My students have used the giant pea-pod to read and calm down, have used the timers and fidgets to help them stay focused on their work, have appreciated that the stories help them to understand themselves, and have loved the reward of getting to use the kinetic sand when they complete their work--just to name a few of the ways that your gift has made an impact.

Your donations have enriched my classroom and helped students with autism have better access to learning. You've also helped other students learn about and build empathy for their friends with learning differences. Our whole learning community has benefited from your gifts. Thanks for caring about the educational environment here in Philadelphia!”

  • See Learning Come to Life with Technology!

    Funded Dec 24, 2009

Thank you so much for your generosity towards our classroom. My students and I want to thank you for bringing our classroom experience to life. So many new and interesting possibilities are open to us now in our daily lessons and education!

The projector and speakers have become an intrinsic part of our lessons. Seeing video clips, watching performances, and viewing other students projects creates an incredibly rich experience for the students that we were unable to have before. Students have also begun to become more familiar with a practical technology that will help them be successful in their own lives.

I am so grateful that you would want to help students with special needs that are too often forgotten. May the kindness you have shown come back to you ten-fold.

Thank you so much for your generous gift!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Weiss

I work with 15 to 21 year old students seeking an alternative program to help them attain their high school diploma. Our students come from areas of intense poverty and violence and benefit greatly from our rich community of support and empowerment. Our dedicated staff works everyday to provide an education that meets many levels of needs. However, at the end of the day a lack of resources stunts our ability to meet our students needs. Your support is appreciated and makes a direct impact in our students' lives.
