  • Eye-Catching Activism

    Funded Jul 28, 2022

My students frequently ask me what that large machine is in the back of the room. Unfortunately I never had a chance to use it and now I am moving to a different position. I know there are plenty of other amazing teachers at school who are working on extremely important projects who will get use out of the Silhouette. I am so proud to have incredible colleagues who put so much heart into teaching our students to be amazing citizens. For example, there has been an ongoing effort to raise money for Ukrainian refugees at Dever. Dever Dragons do amazing things and this machine will only encourage them.”

  • Good Books Are Mirrors, Windows, and Doors to the World!

    Funded Nov 4, 2022

I teach 6th and 7th grade social studies. 6th grade is technically World Studies and 7th grade is technically US History. Since I wasn't starting with a large library of my own, these books are incredibly valuable to our classroom.

A major unit my 6th grade class has done is around the novel, Refugee. We've talked extensively about the Holocaust and WWII and our new books have helped a lot. I have been able to plan lessons I couldn't have done without these books. In 6th grade we also cover geography which I now have books on!

I have let students borrow books about different topics simply because they are interested in them. It feels good knowing I can provide them with these texts in my classroom. I know these books are helping create life-long learners!”

  • Our Personal Care Cart!

    Funded Aug 13, 2022

Our personal care cart has been very valuable throughout the school year. Students were very emotional when they first saw what is in it since they didn't realize I cared about their hygiene and well-being so much. Students use the materials frequently. Floss is one of the most used items. It is easy to go up to the cart and just take what you need.

Students quietly take deodorant when they need it and keep it in their lockers. This is exactly what I imagined because I know kids are body-conscious and I don't want them to feel different over something they can't control.

I want students to feel comfortable in my room and I think they do. There is no shame in going into the personal care cart.”

  • Books, Books, Books for All!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

My students are elated with the new books. Many have already drawn connections to themes we read about as a class. One student instantly recognized that we have new twisted fairy tales. Many of my students were excited to see that we got "Iggy Peck, Architect" which is part of the same world as "Rosie Revere, Engineer."

My students are buddy reading our new books and pointing out awards the books have won. They are overwhelmed by all the new options they have to read. They are switching books with each other once they are finished with them. My students have developed a love for reading that goes far beyond reading for the standard twenty minutes a day. They read every chance they get!

These books are going to benefit many students for years to come. My classroom is a literacy rich environment and I have always tried to get as many books as possible that will appeal to different interests. My present and future students and I are so lucky to have had this project funded!”

  • Diverse Books to Encourage Tolerance in Second Graders

    Funded Aug 16, 2017

Thank you so much for the wonderful books! My kids are always so excited to read new books. We have had many incredible discussions about social justice and different cultures because of the new worlds we have explored together thanks to these books. My students come from different cultures and backgrounds and these books have allowed us to talk about subjects we otherwise would not have covered. These conversations have opened my students' eyes to different worldviews and inspired them to be more accepting towards each other. Thank you so much!”

  • Picture Books to Inspire Second Graders!

    Funded Aug 19, 2017

Thank you so much for all your support! My students have become super readers since they have so many great books in the classroom! We have wonderful discussions on fantastic, thought-provoking books that we read as a class. My students have learned a lot about themselves and what it means to be a good citizen because of the wonderful literature at our disposal. The picture books that this project brought into our room are very accessible to all my students. Even those who are not strong readers can look at the pictures and enjoy my read aloud. There are so many great books that we have read thanks to this project! We love to read!”

  • Fun New Chapter Books for Our Listening Center!

    Funded Dec 27, 2016

My students love our new books! We're still receiving more boxes from this order which has my class so excited! They all want to read them and they are big fans of Junie B. Jones and Magic Treehouse. Having so many books from both series is so exciting!

We do Daily Five every day and students have been reading chapter books in small groups. I will read with them and we will answer questions together. Students also read together and to each other which is a lot of fun! My students look forward to Daily Five every day!

I have students who read at different levels and students who read right at the second grade level enjoy these new books the most. Thank you so much for supporting us!!!”

  • GIANT Math Manipulatives for Our GIANT Whiteboard!

    Funded Nov 14, 2016

The math manipulatives our class received have become a daily staple of our math block. We use them for everything! We have begun a unit on arrays and I like to have students come up and create their own arrays which their classmates write addition sentences for. We also did a unit on time and money and were able to use those resources, too! My students love being called up to create problems for their classmates. They always try to challenge each other. I can't wait to get into fractions! The pizza slices are going to be a hit with the class! These resources have allowed me to engage my students more than ever before. I know I will get a lot of use from them in the future, too! Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. C.

  • Scholastic News and Science Spin for Second Graders!

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

We use our Scholastic Magazines about two times a week. There are some really fantastic features that come with the subscription. As a class, we can use the projector to watch videos about the topic each magazine is on and there is an interactive magazine online so everyone can follow along when we read aloud.

Scholastic Magazines are incredibly relevant to the world and the second grade curriculum. My students look forward to reading them and watching the companion videos. If we are studying something outside of the current magazine, I can dig into the archive online to find more videos and magazines to read together.

October was fire safety month and we got to read about the equipment firefighters use every day. This allowed us to talk about community workers AND technology at the same time. We also talked about how to be safe in a fire or fire drill. The Scholastic Magazine is a fantastic discussion starter! Thank you!!!”

  • Read Along Listening Center for Second Grade!

    Funded Aug 25, 2016

My students are incredibly excited every time it's their turn to use the Listening Center. We use the Listening Center during Daily Five for listen to reading. Not all my students read at the same level, so we use listen to reading so that students can hear fluent reading and follow along in a book. We do Daily Five just about every day to increase reading skills. Most primary classrooms do it. My students are divided up into groups where they can work together.

I love that up to eight students can listen to the same story. I often use my laptop or a portable CD player to play the CD. I have also bought a few sets of books and CDs off eBay. I've tried to get books from Scholastic that interest my students.

Right now most of my books only come in sets of four so my students often share read with a partner. I think they like the social aspect of listening to reading. They also like being able to do something different - where they aren't doing all the work and they get to just enjoy a story. Thank you so much!!!”

Hello! I am a second grade bilingual Spanish/ESL teacher in a neighborhood school in Chicago. I am lucky enough to teach in the area where I grew up and continue to live in. I am going into my third year of teaching and I absolutely love what I do! My mother is a teacher so I spent all my days off in high school and college volunteering in her classroom. Teaching is my passion and destiny! I think about how to improve as a teacher every single day. I am hopeful that with guidance and perseverance, I can someday be one of the very best!
