My students are first graders with an array of needs in the South Bronx; our school uses a dual language model(English/Spanish). I work at a community grown charter school that is in it's fifth year and uses the responsive classroom approach. We place a large focus on teaching academic and social emotional skills. My students are eager learners and benefit from differentiated instruction along with additional classroom supports such as visual aids. They enjoy movement breaks where they can dance and express themselves before getting back to their learning goals. At the end of every day children leave smiling and I go home feeling successful.
