A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words
Funded Oct 17, 2016I wanted to write a special thank you for your support of my project, A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words. Your kind donations have helped improve the quality of the education of my English as a New Language students in our school by introducing them to new technology and giving them confidence as learners!
Upon opening the boxes filled with digital cameras, a printer, color printer cartridges, photo paper, a projector and tracing projector my students were ecstatic! On the first day we practiced camera safety and they were so excited to use their new cameras their faces were glowing. Unfortunately, because the cameras arrived very late from Amazon, we only started using them in the few days before Christmas. After spending some time studying portraits and getting inspiration for their own from our visit to the Whitney Museum of American Art, the students are now currently working on their self portraits!
Despite the late arrival of the cameras, the students have been able to use other resources to make beautiful projects. After learning how to "read" photographs for the underlying story or message from the photographer the students crafted essays in English and Spanish. After which they created their own word clouds to make a graphic representation of their essay. Using the word cloud they were able to identify important words in their essay to translate to English. They were able to print these word clouds using the color printer, cartridges and photo paper you helped fund in my Donors Choose Project.
Going in to the spring my students are excited to create their own self portraits, dreamscapes and many other fun projects to help ignite their creativity in writing and grasp of the English Language. For language learners it is of the utmost importance to have visuals to help guide their language use. Having students create their own personal visuals makes their learning that more meaningful. It gives them a chance to communicate their thoughts and feelings in ways that they have yet grasped in their new language. As a teacher I feel honored that they are able to share their stories about themselves with me in this way. In the future I hope to be able to share some of them with you as well!”
With gratitude,
Ms. U.
