This is a Title I school in a working-class district of Honolulu, Hawaii with roughly 40% of students receiving free or reduced-price meals. About 20% of our students are English Language Learners, with many identifying with Asian/South Asian or Pacific Island backgrounds. Our school has approximately 600 students with under 30 students projected to receive Special Education Services for the 2016-17 school year. My students' disabilities include cognitive delays and disabilities, specific learning disabilities, attentional deficits, and autism. The students are very vocal, if not enthusiastic and verbal! We teach them to be kind, loving, and good decision makers, values that our parents also reinforce at home.
