Tech Support, Please!
Funded Oct 22, 2020I cannot thank you enough! This is amazing and I am so grateful for your generous support. I did not think that this project would be funded so soon, thank you!
This funded project will provide me with necessary tools to help my students learn, access materials, and stay engaged during our remote learning time. I am still in shock. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!”

Yes to Learning But Safety First!
Funded Sep 22, 2020Thank you so much for making this project possible! Right now, as you all may know, we are following the news day by day to figure out if in-person learning will occur. These times are so unsettling and crazy! But when we do return in person, I promise that your gifts will be fully utilized and absolutely appreciated! My kiddos right now are so excited for school, they are messaging me everyday to see when I would pick them up. With your help, I can give them confidence that our normal is near and I am getting our classroom ready for them as best as I can. Thank you so much for making this happen for us!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tom

Funded Aug 22, 2014Thank you so much for making this project happen! My students are enjoying the math manipulatives and are understanding math concepts in a whole new way. The manipulatives make fractions more approachable and realistic for the children. They can't wait to get their hands on them! We use the chart easels everyday for our lessons and discussions. The kids especially love the easel's ability to turn into a working table for group discussions! Your gifts have changed our classroom learning entirely this year. It is truly making our new two teacher classroom more manageable and enjoyable all together. Thank you!”

Fifth Grade Flying High With Butterflies!
Funded Apr 3, 2014Thank you so much for your donations! They not only brought us a Butterfly House but magnifying glasses, mallow plants, larvae, and a reference book!
It was a great link to our informational text unit! We learned how to use magnifying glasses, recorded the everyday changes of the butterfly's life cycle, and summed all of our learning into butterfly brochures. These brochures became presentations that were graded. Their presentations were genuine and grounded with firsthand experiences. Although we have not sat through everyone's presentations yet, but the energy remains high.
Besides hard research and firsthand experience, the students learned how to take care of a living being. They were extra attentive to the living conditions of the transforming caterpillar and found creative ways to keep them healthy, such as serving them orange juice and bringing in plants to make the house more "homey." My students were even able to apply what they learned about butterflies to their writing. According to one of my student's Mother's Day letters, one had written, "Mom, I love you. I will care for you until the end of your life cycle, just as I did for my butterfly, Peter."
Your gracious gifts have made a tremendous impact in my class. My students learned how to love, care, and be responsible for a delicate living thing. They were even able to apply their learning to abstract ideas about life. You have made this happen. Thank you for making this project come true.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tom

Funded Feb 26, 2014There were many things we have learned as a class and individuals after reading these books that you, donors, have graciously brought to our classroom. Some of the students' reactions are recorded below. Hopefully, you will be able (via these quotes) to get a feel for the impact you have made on our class.
"When natural disasters hit, not only do humans lose their homes and properties, but sometimes it's very easy to lose hope surviving."
"People use dreams to avoid their dark realities."
"In natural disasters, many people are separated from their friends and families."
"From this book, I learned that when people are stuck in a life threatening situation, they think about what they might want to do in the future because they are worried about having too little time."
"If I were the main character, Junior, who got stuck under a pile of rubble, I think I would think about the friends i used to play with before I moved to my new home. This is because they were my first true friends and thinking about them makes me happy."
As part of our unit study on natural disasters, we have used these books to witness its effects from a perspective that would be unattainable from a news report or an encyclopedia. We have worked in small groups closely reading to understand Junior's survival after the Haiti earthquake in 2010. Since this is a story told from a child's perspective, my students easily related to his thoughts when he was trapped under a pile of rubble waiting for help. Eight Days provided us with an account of the Haitians as regular everyday people who had hopes and dreams for their future and not as victims of a tragedy. It was especially important for them to understand that people from other places have similar desires and react similarly in dire situations. I think this book allowed them to feel in words and pictures what it really means to be human. Our next step is to read Dark Water Rising to wrap up our studies in this unit. This book will provide us the opportunity to read together as a class to mitigate the language barriers that may arise with a complex text such as this one.
Thank you for your kind donations. Without them, we would be teaching and learning about natural disasters via the internet and randomly selected texts from the library. With a class set, our lessons are focused, rigorous, and exciting!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Tom
