Dance Costumes for My Students Black History Month Performance!
Funded Feb 6, 2023Firstly I would like to say thank you! Because of donors like you my students and I were able to put on two separate performances with these costumes and are in the midst of planning our third! These projects were used for our Black History Month Performance at the end of February and then most recently reused by 6th grade students for a dance film collaboration project! The dancers were so excited when they found out we got new dresses to wear for performances. When trying them on and then wearing them on stage the dancers were delighted. I could tell that their confidence level grew tremendously and they for the first time this year showed me and the rest of the school how amazing they are at performing on stage. The costumes really helped to pull the whole performance together and made a huge impact on the level of performance the students gave.
During the first performance they performed to "Lift Me Up" by Rihanna and I wanted the dancers to wear white taking inspiration for the funeral scene in the Black Panther movie that the song is from. The powerful impact of see all these women in white performing a ritual with emotion, grace and strength inspired my dancers as they performed on stage. It brought the audience to tears and a simple thing such as costumes is what made this performance come to life. The second performance was done by my 6th grade class and they created their own dance film. We filmed in various locations all around the school and since the students were taking charge of this project they got to decide their costumes. They choose the white dresses saying that it was a neutral and simple costume that would ground the dance in unity no matter the location of each part of the dance across the school.
As a school we are working to prepare towards our final showcase of the year and I hope to use these costumes again for 4th grade students performing "Wade in the Water" inspired by Alvin Ailey's Revelations. This famous dance has an entire section of dancers in white and these dresses are perfect for this project. When I say costumes go a long way I really mean! Without you all of these performances would have had different outcomes and I cannot be more grateful!”

A Home For Our Dance Costumes!
Funded Dec 21, 2022Firstly I want to thank you for your support of our school, any donation big or small makes a huge impact on our students lives for the better. We are so excited about our new dance shed. My students love performing and jump at any chance they get to be on stage. Our old dance shed held all of our dance costumes which help to make performances on stage even more exciting. My students faces lit up when they found out we were getting a new shed because they know this means more new costumes and more new supplies for the dance room!
So far this year the dancers in our school have performed in our Hispanic Heritage Showcase, Black History Month Showcase, Winter Showcase, Book Lovers Ball, Daughter Hero Dance and All City Festival. The last performance of the year is approaching which is our biggest show yet and now that we have a dry place to store our costumes the students are already begging me to stay in for lunch or stay after school to help organize and hand out costumes! They come to be daily with new ideas of how to make our show even better and everyone's confidence has grown miles! Our Spring Showcase will be one for the books and it is thanks to donors like you that my students have the opportunity to shine on stage!”

Ms. Theobald
