I work with 75 students in grades 3rd-5th. These students are all non-native English speakers that are learning in 9 different regular education classrooms next to their native English speaking peers. In order to support these students I push into classrooms or pull small groups of students out to work on strategies and skills they need to be successful. Research has proven that it takes 2-3 years to develop social language skills necessary for conversation in a new language, but it takes 5-7 years to develop the language necessary for academic success. It is my job to make learning accessible and teach English language skills to these students. I work to create lessons that build on their background knowledge, engage them in meaningful interactions and allow them to practice through interactive activities. This k-5 school has over 700 students in a urban setting.
