First Ever Hoover Book Club!
Funded Jul 5, 2019We received our books and started our book club with four students. Now, our numbers have increased. The students love the books and have been very happy to read and use the reading strategies and technique they are learning.
We have asked the students to use such strategies as text evidence. They must not only ask and answer questions but they must also be able to provide chapter, page and paragraph for their response. They have covered skills such as foreshadowing and identifying points of view, and using inference to analyze feelings, actions, dialogue and thoughts to identify character traits.
The group is made up of all girls with varying reading levels and reading interests. We have speed readers with excellent comprehension who have taken on the task on leading the discussions. We have several girls who have taken on the task of summarizing and dictating for the groups monthly book review. Everyone one is happily looking forward to remainder of our year in our book club.”

Throw! Shoot! Jump! Catch! Kick! Let the Math Games Begin!
Funded Dec 23, 2018My students and I would like to thank you very much for the generous donations that you provided us for our math class. My students were not there the day they were delivered but I had several parents to come in to help assemble everything and even they were overly excited about the games. After everything was put together, each group was allowed time to practice using each of the gaming items. Basketball is a favorite across all of my classes!
These materials have change how my students listen and respond in all of my classes. Before, they were so lethargic or listless that it was hard to get any responses from them and when they did respond, it was not usually the correct answer. Now with equipment provided, they are actively listening during instruction and responding accordingly. They can throw the football, toss a basketball, sling a horseshoe and even swing the ball into the cups if they provide me with the correct answers. This has been the best thing ever for me and them in terms of student participation and even with parent involvement.
As a review for the previous concepts covered in math, the parents and students entered into a math competition. The parents and students had to work together to solve problems before being able to score points during various games. We had a blast! The parents are already asking for round two! For upcoming testing, we will utilize the equipment to help us continue to stay engaged during lessons and review afterwards. Again, Thank you.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Williams
