My school caters to an urban environment. I work with high school students who are at or below poverty levels. I currently teach 10th and 11th grade ELA. Many of my students deal with life issues that I never had when I was their age. My scholars struggle with general reading, reading comprehension, and writing skills. Many of them are afraid of books. I believe this is because they have not found a book that captures their imagination or that they can find a connection with.
I am trying to change this in my English classroom. I am looking to encourage reading and help develop and tone their reading skills. My students may come from a rough environment, but their English teacher cares and wants to help them reach their full potential. These students all have potential. They just need the resources and material to help them along the way!
