I teach in an inner-city school and high poverty school in California. My school is made up of 70% Latino students and 30% African American. Our school has defied the odds in terms of achievement. Each year we continue to gain ground on getting our children to be proficient. In five years, we have almost flipped our numbers; from majority far below basic and very little proficient, to very little below proficiency.
