  • E-A-D-G-B-E... easy as 1-2-3!

    Funded Jul 31, 2013

I want to thank you again for your generous and thoughtful donations to this project. The quality of the guitar program at my school has drastically improved since students have learned how to use the digital clip-on tuners that you have purchased for them. Students are using these tuners at the beginning of each guitar class... it not only keeps them busy, but I see even the most "distracted" students concentrating, patiently focused on tuning each string! It is pretty amazing to behold. Not to mention, students can also play the guitar the way it is supposed to sound! It is essential...

Before we had these tuners, it was virtually impossible for me to keep all of the guitars tuned, all the time. Now that students can tune their own guitars, we all feel pride in the way we sound, as a group and individually. On a personal note, your funding of this project has helped me, as an educator, do my job, which would otherwise not be possible. I am a music teacher without a classroom and without a budget of any kind... I actually keep the guitars in a closet in the cafeteria and teach guitar there during the morning hours when the cafeteria is not being used for lunch routines.

You have truly made my job, which is a constant challenge, a bit easier and a lot more rewarding! Thank you again and again from the bottom of my heart.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Spitzer

  • New Music Program Hopes to Create a Boom!

    Funded Jan 20, 2013

I want to thank you, again, for your thoughtful donations to this project and to the students I teach. The Boomwhackers are easily transported from room to room, durable, good for students of all ages, and easy to use. With the materials purchased, students were able to compose original songs in groups, learn about pitch, melody, chords, and harmony, and engage in experiences that involve working together toward a common goal. A lot of the activities involved compromising and listening to one another, which proved to be very challenging for many students. These important lessons in music, and in life, have been taught in a creative, engaging way, thanks to you. They will surely not be forgotten!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Spitzer

550+ students (general ed, special education, ESL) in grades K-5 have not had a music program in 3 years. They come from very diverse backgrounds and countries - from Ghana to Bangladesh, Yemen to Dominican Republic - and speak various languages. Most students come from low-income homes and many live in an inner-city housing project that is adjacent to the school.
