  • Why No HOODIES?!

    Funded Sep 20, 2023

My students have been able to be warm during this cold Chicago weather. Thanks to you they ALL have the option of wearing a sweater that keeps them warm and in uniform! They are so thankful and so I am!

The quality of the sweater is good and they all look so put together, ready to learn. It truly was a dream come true for the project to get funded and brought to life. Big thank you to all the friends, family, and co-workers that cared so much! See the smiles on their face in the pictures!

    Thank you!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sohn

  • The Real Virtual Learning!

    Funded Sep 4, 2020

Thank you so much for your support for my first project on Donors choose. Students at Northwest middle school have been benefitting significantly from the use of the IPad. I am also to utilize the apple pen and Notes app as a white board. Most recently we have been learning about Pythagorean Theorem and Exponent rules. As you can image typing exponents and square root sign is quite difficult using a keyboard. However students have been able to see the written form thanks to the IPad. The students regularly copy live hand written notes and we can practice problems whole group. I do not need to rely on a pre-made worksheet but can produce intentional and responsive practice problems based on the need of that moment. I am truly grateful for all the support of my friends and family for my students' learning. Huge shout-out for my brother Albert's sacrificial support! I love all of you! Thank you again!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Sohn

Picture this: walking to school is walking to the living room, cafeteria food is off the menu, now you go to the bathroom alone. Things you thought you dreaded you now miss. Seeing your teacher's and friend's face through a screen is just not as cool as you thought it would be. Classes are boring, you don't understand anything, and your eyes and back hurt! Welcome to virtual school! In spring of 2020 I set up my desk and had this large yellow paper behind me that I would use as my "board" (which is 1/10 of the size in a real classroom). On day one we tried taking notes and doing examples of percents. Within seconds my students were yelling through the screen, "It's backwards!!", "I can't see that!" My one way to keep a lesson as close to real school as possible, and it failed. I had to adapt; I typed notes in a word doc, terribly used the numbers and signs they offered. Students waited patiently as I searched for a division sign or had to underline and bold but only after I highlighted. We need pen to paper!!! My students need to actually SEE the flow of a problem come to life in real life! With my terrible side drawings to help it make sense! An iPad will act as a sheet of paper that I write on and is projected to my students screen. They can take notes, ask questions, and do practice problems with me. I will also be able to write on any document I get from the internet. I can pull up their text book and write on it as we are learning. This iPad and pen will make teaching and learning much more interactive and personal between my students and I.
