Help Us Get Scholastic News!
Funded May 14, 2019We love our Scholastic News magazines! My students get so excited when we get to read a new magazine each week! I've been able to use these magazines during whole group instruction as well as during small group instruction. The online content that comes with the magazine subscription is amazing as well! There are videos and activity sheets that go along with each magazine and we love using them!
I've been able to teach many different reading skills using these magazines. Some of them include main idea/details, text features, problem/solution, and answering questions to show understanding of a text. We've also learned many new vocabulary words thanks to these magazines.
These magazines have such a variety of interesting topics that they appeal to all of my students! Which is so great because that's often a hard thing to do! One of the most favorite topics this year was the special camera (called a thermal camera) that firefighters use to see through smoke. Another favorite was learning about the author/illustrator named Mo Willems. We loved learning about how he creates books!
Again, thank you so much for your donation! It's added so much to our classroom and we seriously can't thank you enough!”

Help Replenish Our Classroom Library!
Funded Feb 28, 2019Thank you so much for helping to fund this project for our classroom! My students have already enjoyed having these books in the classroom. And I've loved having books at various levels! Because of the wide range of academic level in my classroom, it's been great being able to add books at the kindergarten, 1st grade, 2nd grade and 3rd grade levels. Not only that, I've been able to use some as read alouds and mentor texts with my class.
It's been fun to watch how excited my students have been about the new books in our classroom library! Plus with some of the books having more than one copy, they are able to read with a partner, which is something they love doing!
Again, thank you so much for your donation!!”

Funded Aug 22, 2018It has been absolutely amazing having these new books in our classroom! My students don't just love that we have new books, but they love the diverse characters in these new books! They can relate to many of the characters, because of how they look and different aspects of their lives.
My students always get excited when it's time for independent reading time. They love being able to choose their own books and sit at different places around the classroom. We've got pillows and small carpet squares that they can use. We've got a large rug for them to lay on while they read. My students don't just silent read; they also use reading codes in a journal to share their thinking as they're reading. They may share something new they learned, a question they have, their favorite part, or a funny part.
Thank you again for your donation for these new books for our classroom! They are a wonderful addition to our classroom library!”

Funded Mar 16, 2018Thank you so much for your donation for new headphones for our classroom! I really appreciate your generosity in helping us out!
My second grade classroom is lucky enough to have enough Chromebooks for each student to have their own. Throughout the day, we use our Chromebooks for various activities. We use a couple of websites to practice our addition and subtraction math facts. We also use Google Classroom to complete different assignments. Many of our texts for reading are online.
My students are able to use their new headphones with their Chromebooks, which allows us to have various activities going on at the same time in the classroom. I have a lot of varying ability levels in my classroom so students are often working on different things. Having individual headphones gives my students the ability to focus on their own activity and not be distracted by the sounds from the Chromebooks of other students.
Thank you again for supporting our classroom! Your donation has made a world of difference for my students!”

Help Us Get Scholastic News!
Funded Jan 10, 2018Thank you so much for donating to our classroom's project! We are so excited to be receiving Scholastic News magazines! These magazines are perfect for introducing my students to real world news. I love that my students are reading real news at an appropriate level for their age and reading levels. We use these magazines to work on skills such as main idea/key details, summarizing, text features, and just learning about current events.
If you were to walk into my classroom, you would see students reading Scholastic News in a small group led by me, with a partner, or individually. That's what I love about these magazines! They're so versatile and I'm able to plan various types of lessons that incorporate them as the main text.
I have a couple of students who have particularly enjoyed the magazines! They are really into nonfiction text and this has given them a different type of nonfiction text to read besides the books I have in our classroom library.
Again, thank you so much for your donation!”

Help Us Use Our iPads to Become Osmo Geniuses!
Funded Nov 7, 2016Thank you so much for donating to our project! We were able to get Osmo Genius kits for our classroom. I have been able to differentiate some in-class practice for students at different levels. They have been able to work independently to improve their phonics and spelling during our reading block. They have also been able to work on increasing their number sense in math. My students love using technology in our classroom and have loved this fun and new way for them to practice different skills with our iPads. I really appreciate your generosity in donating to our classroom!! Thanks again!!!”

"Time for Kids" To Read More Nonfiction
Funded Sep 26, 2016Thank you so much for your generous donation! The Time for Kids magazine is one of my favorite things to use with my students during our reading block! My students (and I!) love that each issue contains a real-life topic. We love reading about all the interesting things happening in our world. I especially love that these real-life topics are presented at an appropriate level for my second graders.
We use the reading in a variety of ways. Sometimes we will read the magazines as a whole class; sometimes students will read them with a partner or on their own. I think my favorite is when they read with a partner. I love hearing the natural discussion that comes from their reading together.
After reading, we always focus on a comprehension skill. Text features are a big topic in second grade so often, we will focus on identifying those features and how they help us understand what we are reading. Sometimes we will discuss or answer questions to show understanding of the text.
These magazines really help enhance my teaching of reading in the classroom! The added piece of text each week allows me to present my students with a different type of text than what our curriculum provides. I love that I have an opportunity to use these magazines in my classroom and I thank you again for your donation to this project!”

Funded Dec 31, 2014Thank you so much for donating to our classroom project! My students were super excited to not only have brand new materials to use, but also to have enough materials for everyone. Every student loved that we received kits that contained various types of magnets for our units.
My students used them everyday during our magnets unit during the spring. We even had enough materials to share with the other two second grade classes at our school. The magnets were used to learn about how magnets work. They were also used to apply the scientific inquiry process. Students created predictions about various items in the classroom and if they were magnetic or not. Then they used our new magnets to test the items and draw conclusions from their experiment.
Without your generosity, we would not have had enough materials for all of our students. Thank you again for helping to enhance my students' learning. It is greatly appreciated!”

Mrs. Guild
