Building Social Awareness Through Current Events
Funded Jul 13, 2020My students love their Scholastic News subscriptions! They are looking forward to their next issue and are so excited by the idea that it is their very own!
I have a wide variety of learning levels this year as well as English New Language students (ENL). With your generous donations I was able to order Scholastic subscriptions in a variety of reading levels. This way everyone is enjoying the materials! What I am also finding wonderful is that the students are speaking with each other more and discussing their different articles. This has open many a class discuss because each student is curious about what their classmate is reading.
Moving forward it is my hope that the students will be able to use these magazines to improving their writing and use of textual evidence as well. Scholastic provides wonderful additional resources that encourage students to develop their critical thinking skills. Yet again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your support.”

Help Build Executive Function Skills to Strengthen Students' Organization
Funded Jul 11, 2020My students' eyes lit up when they received their personalized folders! "Cool," "Awesome," "For us?!" rang throughout the room. My students and I are using our new resources to strengthen their executive functioning and organizing skills. Since my hybrid students are only coming in to school a couple days a week these labeled folders are helping them to stay organized. They keep their weekly Scholastic News magazine in their folder as well as their resources and classwork. They understand that this folder is only to be used for Social Studies so that they do not misplace any other material in this folder.
I find that when my students receive new materials that they know they get to keep they treat those materials much more carefully. Currently they are also being covered with all the stickers they are earning! My hope is that since these folders are made of durable material my students will be able to use it in their Social Studies classes throughout Middle School!”

Support Back To School Supplies for Children in Need
Funded Jul 22, 2020Thank you for your generosity especially during these difficult times! My students are very grateful to have their individual classroom supplies! When I asked which color notebook a student wanted she exclaimed, "There are more than one? You mean I get to choose?!" It was a lovely moment watching her write her name on her green notebook.
Throughout the school year the students will use these materials to help stay organized and write down important deadlines and information. Though this generation of students are far more tech savvy than previous ones, navigating all the Google Classroom as well as transitioning to having more than one teacher now that they are in middle school has them appreciating the important of writing notes or notices down.
It is my hope that these supplies, thanks to all of you, will make their blending learning experience an easier transition.”

Funded Aug 11, 2020Thank you for your generosity especially during these difficult times! My students are forever grateful for their mapping activities! Because of their masks we may not be able to see their smiles but I know they are there!
I will be using the laminated maps to review absolute and relative location. My students will use dry erase markers and plot their coordinates on the map. Having the ability to work in a larger format and with the marks allows me to make this activity far more engaging and fun!
My original purpose for the country profile activity was for my students to select a country and research it throughout the entirety of our Geography Unit. This would have been our first attempt at a project based learning assignment. Unfortunately, due to a Covid-19 outbreak in the surrounding neighborhood my school was closed for 3 weeks. We are now back to in-person blended learning but wrapping up the Geography Unit. Because of this, I've decided instead my students will now be researching a classmates' home country for this activity. It is my hope that through their research this shy, sweet, and quiet bunch will warm up to each as well as gain compassion and cultural awareness.”

Funded Aug 13, 2019Thank you for your donations! It was a wonderful moment when I was able to surprise my Advertising students with their new printer. They love building their portfolios and seeing their own progress.
Previously, we would conduct critiques by viewing projects on my SmartBoard. Because of your generosity, we are now able to do physical gallery walks during which the students are able to get up close to view projects. Sometimes we like to be silly and pretend we are buying artwork at a fancy gallery in Soho!
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all for your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. My students' learning and design experiences are more engaging, colorful, and fun—because of all of you!”

Funded Aug 13, 2019Thank you for your donations! It is a wonderful gift to provide my students with the appropriate learning tools. The individual student supply kits are a huge hit! Because of your donations I will be able to do more hands-on activities than ever! And the kids love having their own supplies.
Thanks to your donation of binder tabs, loose-leaf paper, and pencils ALL of my students were able to organizer their binders this year. Each section is labeled with a title and materials that should be placed within that section. The binder tabs include, Unit Specific, Vocabulary, Maps & Timelines, and Writing Resources. Watching my students gain skills in their organization and responsibility is incredibly rewarding. My colleagues have even commented that my students are using these skills in other classes. Resulting in less missing assignments and notes!
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. My students learning experience is more organized, efficient and fun because of all of you!”

Funded Aug 15, 2019Thank you for your donations! It is a wonderful gift to provide my students, and myself with a clean and healthy classroom environment. With your donations I am able to thoroughly clean my classroom every afternoon. This allows my students to start their day fresh and healthy. It is my hope that reducing a germy environment will increase my students' attendance.
Students who've miss multiple days of class due to sickness are left scrambling to make up missing assignments and homework. Tests have shown that missing 9 days of school is equivalent to 1/2 a month (49.5 hours) of instructional time lost. Each additional 9 days of absences continue to double that educational loss. Students being ill and missing much needed instructional time does not only result in lower grades but a deficiency in college and career readiness.
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. My students' learning experience is stronger and healthier because of all of you!”

Funded Feb 11, 2019Thank you for your donations! It is a wonderful gift to provide my students with the appropriate learning tools. The students have used these highlighters to identify various components of their writing. This strategy helps the students and I assess what sections need to be developed further or reorganized. With your donations I am able to thoroughly help my students organize and expand upon their constructed responses.
In addition, I am excited to announce that now my colleagues are using this strategy as well! It warms my heart to be able to loan my materials knowing that even more children are benefiting from your donations and an important writing skill.
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. My students learning experience is stronger and more effective because of all of you!”

Advertising Textbooks
Funded Nov 15, 2018Creating a new class, and curriculum can be overwhelming, Made You Look by Shari Graydon has taken a complex topic and made it relatable and understandable to my students. This revised and updated edition of the text maps out the modern ad landscape, from digital tracking and cookies to social media, viral videos, and reality television. What is lovely about this textbook is that my students will continue to utilize it throughout their middle school career.
All of my students are enjoying these textbooks! What is unique about Made You Look is that the content is obtainable for all of the reading levels within my classroom. My struggling readers are able to use the images and cartoons to better understand the concepts within the components of advertising and my middle to higher level readers are excited by the content and new vocabulary words.
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank all of you for your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm. My students learning experience is stronger because of all of you!”
