This light table will teach my kiddos so much! They will learn social emotional skills like sharing, turn taking, and being gentle with each other. They will learn self-regulation skills such as sustained focus and appropriate use of materials (ie - don't throw the sensory beads!). The more my students practice calm, focused behaviors, the more naturally they repeat those behaviors. They will learn about cause and effect, translucency, opacity, and transparency, and explore in a hands on matter how light works and how it affects a variety of objects. It will keep students' focus sustained on activities such as letter ID and counting. It will also keep restless little bodies and hands that want to run and jump and grab in the classroom busy and productive! This allows for many things: a calmer classroom has a positive feedback cycle - more calmness. When the classroom gets chaotic, more and more kids get too wild, and productivity goes out the window! especially since we are always short staffed and our kids have special needs. This light table will keep many students (4 at a time) busy, productive, and happy, which means overall the class feels peaceful and kiddos continue to be productive other places - whether library time or working 1:1 with me or an aide.
