Helping My Students With Autism Learn Through Visuals
Funded Sep 29, 2015We can't thank you enough for the generous gifts you provided to our classroom. The boys were so excited and amazed to have these supplies sent, that they couldn't wait to open the boxes (which they actually upcycled into a classroom puppet theater). They wanted to help set up the printer and laminator, and really loved seeing the vibrant images they produced. They used these in classroom projects, and I used them for various signs and posters around the room. Being able to laminate visuals like our weather Kangaroo and rotation charts, means these items will endure the student's frequent use.
For my three little wiggle worms, they found the wiggle seats quite comfortable and fun. They felt very special to have a seat just for them, and I was able to see the time spent at their desks and staying on task start to increase. The time-timer worked out great to visually represent the abstract concept of time. Instead of students constantly asking how much time they were to spend on a certain task, or the ever frequent "Is it lunch time yet?," all they needed to do was look up at the timer and they were reassured that as they saw the red slowly disappear, they would soon be done with whatever their activity was.
I really am so appreciative of your support for students with special needs. Standard classroom supplies and resources available to these students are beneficial, but often times, students with special needs, need more. They need more visuals. They need more time. They need more support. And they need more people, like you Donors, who care and play an important part in their success. Thank you!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Sands
