My preschool classroom (ages 3, 4, and 5) consists of students with a wide range of learning styles and individual preferences. All students are learning how to actively develop and use their listening skills. Sometimes, all the commotion of free choice time and 17 students makes it hard to focus on listening and, more importantly, comprehending. My classroom does not have an easily accessible Listening Center, so I would love to have a mobile listening unit that stores headphones, books, and CD player for easy access. Developing listening skills is imperative to my students' future success. Children need to focus on learning listening skills, even more so at the early childhood and elementary level. Listening Centers help emergent readers to experience how the words on the page can come alive in a fluid, expressive way. Listening also helps students focus on the sounds of words read without interruption and provides a model of fluent reading. Listening has three parts to it: (1) hearing the speaker, (2) understanding what the speaker is saying and (3) making a judgment based on that understanding. Narrators on tape embellish their storytelling with silly voices and dramatic enhancements. Listening Centers emphasize reading as a source of pleasure rather than a skill and make children eager to learn how to read. Beyond their sheer enjoyment of audio books, children also build vocabulary and understanding of language. Stories on tape help them to grasp the rich and various ways in which language distills and conveys meaning. This compact unit will allow us to set up the listening center anywhere in our classroom quickly and easily! My students would be truly grateful since we have not been able to use our listening center often. Please help us bring our Listening Center to life!
