My students are with a variety of special education needs such as learning disabilities, behavioral concerns, autism, cognitive delays, vision impairments and other health impairments. They are attending an inner city public school in IL. I am working with them and their families so they can be be more involved in education and value it. I attend a variety of community events to gather information about their learning and living environment so I know how to best help them in the classroom while being sensitive to their needs academically and socially. There are many outside factors that stand in their way of education like gangs, drugs, abuse, divorced parents, young parents, working parents, parents not speaking English, parents not finishing school themselves and taking care of themselves without parental guidance. Sometimes, it is like survival/street smarts is more important to them than their education. I want them to put education first and be successful beyond these obstacles!
