There are many benefits to a flexible seating classroom, and most importantly it enhances learning across all ages. -Flexible seating empowers students to make some choices over their learning environment and hold them accountable for that choice. -Flexible accommodations allow highly active students to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. -Research shows physical activity is linked to higher academic performance, better health, and improved behavior. -Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused and productive. - Flexible seating encourages students to be less territorial over their space causing the classroom community to collaborate positively. -The University of Minnesota found that students participated 48 percent more in discussions in a classroom with collaborative group seating versus traditional lecture-style seating, and also improved their performance on standardized tests. -Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information which is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD, and ASD. Most importantly, flexible seating helps make learning fun. Students get to control and enjoy their academic day and forget about the daily at-home issues.
