My class is a mix of ESL and regular education students. Our school is Title 1, and we have 99% reduced price lunch. About 70% of our students are ESL, and they are mainly Latinos. The majority of them come from El Salvador. Some come from Honduras, Mexico and Dominican Republic. My ESL students are motivated, yet challenged by many issues such as poverty, lack of parental involvement, absence of a parent or sometimes both parents, and finally safety, as the neighborhood is considered a high crime area of North west DC. School to them is shelter and a place where they can get food, and feel safe.
