Our third grade social studies curriculum takes us around the world, studying different people and cultures, as well as landforms and geography. Because we are a STEM school, we integrate math and science into our curriculum, tracking weather and learning about climate and weather patterns around the world and using large distances to drive a study on large numbers that develops deep understandings of place value. Using color images of maps, photos and other resources makes our curriculum come alive for students. Together, we build a world map by "traveling" to exotic places and learning how people thrive in each place, comparing that to our own lives in Brooklyn. We learn about the Brooklyn Bridge and then study other bridges around the world comparing their structures and the materials they're made of. We take a "closet inventory" of our own clothes and then compare that to photos of people around the world, noticing how humans use clothing for protection and personal expression. All of this work is made possible through technology. We use laptops and are hoping to gain more iPads to expand learning beyond the walls of the classroom. A color printer and toner will allow students to print and share photos with the class, writing thoughtful, fact-based analyses of images and making presentations based on their work. I am asking for this specific printer because it is the model many classrooms in my school have, which will make it easier to get technical support and supplies when necessary.
