Moving And Grooving For Wellness
Funded Sep 1, 2018Thank you for supporting wellness at Kohala Elementary School. The PE equipment along with the SPARK curriculum provides games and lessons designed to involve all children and help them be more active. The SPARK curriculum incorporates social skills and emphasizes health-related fitness and skill development. We have used the new balls, flying disks and beanbags for relays and games. We have used the CD player and SPARK Dance CD to form pairs and develop social skills, cooperation and trust.
I was really pleased that the SPARK activities and games can be used singularly, or in the context of a yearly plan to provide a progression in fitness development and skill learning. In the past, I've come up with a series of outdoor games to use with students like: Capture the Baton, Sharks and Minnows, Dodgeball, etc. These games can get boring, and repetitive. Having this SPARK Manual provides units of Instruction to focus on fitness rather than just playing games. And the Sportime equipment, purchased through Donors Choose, allows me to implement activities with less time spent looking for equipment in the school's equipment shed.
Once again, I appreciate your help in obtaining the Sportime Equipment and the CD player through Donors Choose. These items round out the PE program for 5th graders at our school. It's really nice to have this practical SPARK guide to aid my PE lessons. In addition, the CD player and new sports equipment (easy catch footballs, beanbags, flying discs, boundary cones, jump ropes, rubber balls etc.) are cherished items to benefit the fifth grade PE program. The students and I appreciate your generosity and support of education through movement!”

Movin' and Groovin'
Funded Jan 13, 2018My students were very excited to receive the box of materials. I did not expect the box to arrive so quickly and we began using the equipment right away.
I've used the Tug of War rope with all 65 students during PE. A specific moment in which the 50 ft rope was used, was after a long excursion where students were sitting on the bus for 45 minutes. At the end of that day, students enjoyed releasing energy by challenging other classes to multiple games of Tug of War.
The youth basketballs are used daily during recess. Students play GOTCHA and challenge each other to make baskets from different points on the basketball court. The 14 colored vests help me know who is on what team during outdoor games.
The juggling scarves and spinning plates are used during PE or indoor recess. It's nice to see students stick with the juggling or spinning plates, because the skill doesn't come easily. Once one student masters the spinning plates, I encourage that individual to share their technique with others. One student's confidence began to grow as he got to help others spin the plates.
Having these items gives me more options for PE and recess. My students and I are grateful for your donation and support toward the "Moving and Grooving'" project.”
With gratitude,
Ms. R.
