SEL and Yoga for My Students and School Community!
Funded Jan 24, 2023With your help I have begun my journey to get SEL*F and Yoga certification by Breath 4 Change. I am into week 5 of my training and learned so much already about trauma informed yoga, self care and building community. I cannot wait to bring these tools to my students and colleagues next school.
This highlight for me has been learning different ways to support my school community. This program focuses on everyone involved in my students' lives: the student, the teachers, and the parents. What better way to foster healthy minds and bodies than to reach all members of the community.
Although I won't be certified until July. One thing I can begin to use with my students are mindfulness exercises to reduce stress. Thank you again, I am enjoying this opportunity so much.”

Funded Sep 20, 2019Your generous gifts have impacted my students greatly. Many of my students are working towards earning a Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) endorsement. Through this work they are able to utilize the experience towards obtaining a diploma. Having the use of a laptop allows them to work in quiet places or with teachers they feel support them the best. They are able to research and explore career and college options. Many have taken online interest surveys that help spark their interests and drive their career goals.
My students are most excited about how fast their Chromebooks perform. We currently have a set of 8, 3 obtained through your donations and 5 from a previous Donor's Choose project. Most of my students do not have access to technology at home and when in school most Chromebooks are old and barely working. In addition, when there is a laptop cart available the laptop must be used within the classroom and department in which it is housed. This makes it difficult for students to work 1:1 with teachers or in small groups outside of a designated classroom. Your donations have provided another resources and entry point for student with disabilities.
The students I teach that are most excited about our new Chromebooks are a handful of learners who are working hard to obtain the last credits needed for graduation. They are often the students who are making up work before school, at lunch, and or after school when computers are not easily accessible. We thank you for helping students that require extra support work towards obtaining their goals.”

Funded Jan 26, 2018As a technology school we attempt to use many online platforms in order to help facilitate instruction and learning. However, due to budgetary constraints we do not have enough laptops available for our students. Some of the most beneficial uses of technology with my students has been audio books and Google Suite. As a special education teacher technology allows for multiple access points in instruction. Students who are struggling readers have the ability to listen to audio of text while following along with the print, such as with Bookshare.org. Google Suite gives the students access to Google Classroom where assignments are posted and links are accessed. Google Docs allow students to type or use voice typing, shared documents allow teachers to leave comments and highlight what needs to be corrected. Google Slides aid in presentation of material to students, as well as student presentation in class. In addition, in CDOS class specifically we use technology for career exploration. Students work on a variety of sites such as Career Zone and Career One Stop, this has helped them build their portfolio for Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS), which some will utilize to fulfill a regent exam and others for endorsement purposes.
The students are most excited about their accessibility to laptops. Typically we spend too much time trying to secure use of technology and when we do it is often in an obscure place or not working up to par. With your donations my students can remain in their classroom and work towards fulfilling the requirements of the course. When they receive intervention and need a computer they can work discreetly in our classroom. Moreover, the students always comment on how well the laptops work, not like the old ones that are typically available for their use.
I have a handful of 11th and 12th grade students with IEP's that often spend time before school or during lunch getting additional assistance to complete their work. They know that as soon as they arrive that working technology is always available. For many of them, they do not have computer access at home, so this aids in their success at school. In addition, as a Special Education teacher I co-teach ELA and my partner has been able to raise money for laptops as well. Our combined efforts have not gone without notice by the students in our classroom. They are grateful for the use of these new devices and have asked us to work on getting enough for the entire class.”
