Funded Jun 12, 2020My students and I thank you for your donation. Reading is such an important part of learning. However, many of my students have limited access to books. In addition, it is not often that they are exposed to books that include characters and situations that are similar to their own life experiences.
In my classroom, we have book clubs. My students engage in independent reading of a particular book and throughout the course of reading the book they discuss and analyze the characters, the problems and solutions. They also dive deep into personal connections between what is happening in the book versus their own lives.
As part of teaching my students to become life long readers, I feel that it is important for them to be able to see themselves in the characters that they read about. This is even more important with my student population, as my students are faced with many challenging circumstances in their lives. By giving them the opportunity to read books where they see how the characters navigate around their own challenges and still manages to persevere , my students are able to imagine their own success and push themselves to excel. I thank you for giving my students the gift of reading!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Jackson
