Middle schoolers begin to be more aware of what's happening in the world and how that affects them. That is why we must teach the skill of empathy to our students. Empathy is a skill that strengthens with practice and encourages people to give and receive it often. Kindness can become its own motive. We are made kind by being kind. It is a continuous refining process. Wonder gives us a perfect opportunity to engage the child holistically. This is a story that can inspire our students and to give them the courage to take on others' perspectives. As well as increase their social emotional wellness. Who are you inspired to be? We hope our students have the sense of wonder and aspire to be kind and empathetic individuals, who will then embody and advocate kindness and empathy wherever they go. Our 5th and 6th graders need a copy of the novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio to begin to study the internal and external conflict within the characters and to analyze particular events to create connections between themselves and the world. The culminating activity gives our students a chance to create a social change campaign on how we all can spread kindness and empathy within the walls of our school and the community.
