Makeup Magic: Bring Characters to Life in Advanced Theatre!
Funded Nov 26, 2024This year I was able to launch our advance technical theatre course, and your contribution made it possible to provide students with hands on experience exploring the professional world of theatrical makeup design. Our students waited in anticipation to hear if our project would be funded by the deadline. When I brought them the news...they cheered and celebrated! As the packages came in they excitedly helped me organize our new inventory and got a sense of what materials they would use to bring their designs to life.
They developed characters for a fantasy makeup project, developing a backstory and full profile for their character. Then they created a face chart demonstrating their vision for the overall makeup look. Finally, with the help of you generous donors, they were able to execute the designs using makeup products. They will explore more character designs through makeup as the unit progresses, incorporating special fx as well thanks to you!”

This classroom project was brought to life by The Maxwell/Hanrahan Foundation and 13 other donors.Enchanting Dreams: Making the Magic of Aladdin Jr.
Funded Feb 19, 2024Your contributions allowed for our students to take ownership of their production! The students were able to experience prop making and used the materials to bring the world of Agrabah to The Bronx.
Students used the foam to create unique treasures for the cave of wonders and prop fruits and vegetables for the marketplace! It was amazing ot see their drawings come to life with just a little bit of foam and paint!
This was our first time having a middle school technical theatre class, and these resources helped us lay the groundwork for future middle school tech classes to come!”

Illuminate Our Tech Theatre Classroom!
Funded Aug 25, 2022The addition of LED lighting in our technical theatre class gave me the ability to bring STEM to life through lights. The LED fixtures made learning about lighting design a much more realistic hands-on experience for our students. They were able to conceptualize color mixing by actually seeing how Red Green and Blue lights mix to form different colors. They were able to use a DMX controller which has similar features to a traditional lighting console and made connections to real-world circumstances where they may find a professional who engages with this technology (theatre, concerts, parties...etc)
Students were most excited to participate in our M&M's color lab where they learned about the science behind color and light. Under each specific color of the light (Red, Blue, Green) they had to sort the M&M's. I believe students having the agency to manipulate the lighting in a professional way (through the DMX board) made it more exciting for them. What is exciting for me is learning about technology with my students. I am not an expert, so this new equipment is making space for students to research and discover all of its possible functions and uses.
What made this lighting project extra special was seeing my students of all demographics excel in the application of the lighting concepts - My Gen Ed, ENL, SPED and non-verbal students were all able to demonstrate an understanding of lighting as a means to communicate. That was something truly special. I am so grateful for these materials and will continue to use them for years to come.”
