  • Engaging and Accessible for Spanish Learners

    Funded Dec 31, 2023

I am very excited for this project. My students are eager to use the program and learn with the interactive features. We are very grateful for your interest in our learning of two languages and developing our bilingual brains. We look forward to a bright future, thanks to your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jimenez, Arlene

  • Movement Fun!

    Funded Nov 2, 2022

With all the Physical Education equipment you supplied to us, my students have been engaged in physical activities everyday. They look forward to our short 20 minutes of PE class, and they know exactly what to do with the equipment. There is no wasted time, and they are moving ALL THE TIME.

My students have become more confident in jump rope, hula hoops, basketball skills, and tossing and catching. It is amazing to see how equipment creates fun and excitement in PE activities. My students felt a lot more confident when doing the Fitnessgram testing because they had many practice rounds with the equipment and felt they had become better physically, specially in the stretching and flexibility.

We truly appreciate the interest in our classroom and we will continue to put the equipment to use.”

  • One Student, One Book: Shared Reading Experience

    Funded Apr 7, 2022

Your donations have helped grow our classroom library. It is very difficult to find appropriate books that spark the interest of students in 5th grade. But it is even harder for our Dual Language school. I need to keep up with English trade books as well as Spanish. We with your help, I was able to order authentic books written by authors from South America, Spain and Mexico.

My students loved the graphic novels in Spanish. They didn't even know that these series existed and now they are hooked on reading!

Not only did you help us grow our classroom library, but you helped me as teacher to spark that light in every one of my students. They have all found themselves as readers not only in English, but in their second language, Spanish. I am amazed to see everyone one of my students immersed inside a book.

We are all having fun with the new selection of books in our classroom library.”

  • Culturally Responsive Books

    Funded Aug 10, 2021

We have grown our Spanish classroom library with your donations. The list of books have made it possible for us to learn about stories from Central America, South America and Spain. We have touched on typical fairy tales but from a different point of view. Most importantly, our class has grown fond of learning about animals native to Latin America. Students have a wide variety of choice when it comes to our Spanish library and they are all enjoying it.

While keeping the students engaged, we have been practicing independent reading skills by sustaining our reading time between 30 and 45 minutes without interruptions. During this reading time, the class practices their "good reader" skills like making inferences, asking questions, and lifting lines from the text to respond to the text in writing.

As a teacher, I have seen that the greatest impact from your donation is that students now can choose a book based on their independent preference, and they can understand why they choose a type of book over another type of book. That is very important to develop as lifelong readers.”

  • "Staying Curious" With Mystery Science

    Funded Dec 28, 2019

Thanks to your donations, I was able to purchase an online membership to Mystery Science videos and hands on lesson activities for students to explore and expand their scientific minds.

We are currently learning about food webs and our place in local ecosystems. We watched the Mystery Science video to spark our curiosity. Then the students were able to play and explore a food web game in which they read about living creatures and connected them in a food chain.

Most importantly, we got to go outside to our neighborhood canyon to explore our local ecosystems and food webs. The students were able to connect their in-class learning to real life experiences.

At the end of each lesson, the online membership has short assessments. Every single student in my class felt confident to answer the questions using the vocabulary from the lessons and videos (which are displayed permanently using the easel, also provided by your donations).

I am really grateful for your contribution to our learning! It has brought science alive for my students, and they are already improving their motivation, engagement and achievement.”

  • Anti-Bullying “Wonder”Ful Novel Study

    Funded Feb 3, 2020

Thanks for supporting my classroom. You have opened a wonderful opportunity for us to learn from different perspectives in order to better understand each other’s differences. My goal is to engage my fifth graders in collaborative conversations about equity and accepting individuality. Again, I appreciate your interest in our classroom and our project.”

    With gratitude,

  • Defining Problems and Planning Solutions through STEM

    Funded Aug 31, 2019

My students have loved the hands-on science investigations! Together, have created questions and possible solutions for current, real-life problems. The topics we have explored are: deciding which resources to develop, creating simple machines, dissecting corn and labeling each part and its function and connecting it to selective breeding.

We have also brainstormed new ideas for future investigations like: how oil spills affect animals and humans alike, how can we reserve freshwater and use ocean water as power, and what invention in the last hundred years has been the most influencial in our lives.

When science is connected to our daily lives, students are engaged and are more inclined to create their own questions and investigations. It sparks an interest in research and writing.

Thanks to your donations of materials and science starter kits, my most reluctant readers and writers are looking for resources to explain their findings in writing. It has made their learning meaningful.”

  • Authentic Spanish Books

    Funded Aug 8, 2019

The books you have donated to my classroom have helped my students tremendously. They have access to a bigger classroom library where they can go and select books through out the day. Most importantly, the students are able to work independently in their daily routines because they can access information and a variety genres during their independent work.

Also, the students love to read the new selections with buddy readers. Every month our school has "family Friday" in which the students get to read with their parents, siblings and other family members. The new addition to our library provides the students and their families with books that are interesting and accessible in their home language (Spanish).

I know my students have become increasingly interested in reading both English and Spanish books due to the new variety that you have helped us add to our library.”

  • Learning Core Content Through Visual Art

    Funded Aug 31, 2017

The art materials in my classroom have been a great aid in creating projects for the students to understand social studies and science through the arts. Usually, we just have crayons to create art. When I showed them markers, the students were very excited and interested in the lesson. We learned about different traditions in November and decorated a DA de Los muertos sugar skull using different strokes of the marker. I had never seen a group of kindergarteners so focused and excited about learning how to color using different lines of a marker.

In December we have been learning about traditions in Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas and the symbols representing each holiday. For this, we have used color pencils with primary and secondary colors to bring the social studies traditions to life. More importantly, we have been creating 3D models of trees with wax sticks and labeling the parts of the tree for science class.

I can say that every single student in the classroom is engaged and on task for social studies and science because of the materials you have donated. It makes the learning fun for them and it also allows them to be creative when creating their art pieces.”

  • Exciting TOON Graphics!

    Funded Mar 6, 2017

My class and I were anxiously waiting for our new books. The moment I opened our box of Toon Graphics, everyone was excited to see what each book was about. I previewed each book with the whole class and they loved the variety. There's myths, legends, ancient history, contemporary stories and dark fairy tales. Everyone's eyes were glittering with excitement! This is the type of library addition we needed to spark interest in reading.

The books were placed in our classroom library for the students to select during independent reading. I have seen students select these books and read them together with a friend. My reluctant readers chose these books because the graphics are appealing. They usually skim the whole book by looking at pictures and then they go back and read the captions. My advanced readers are picking the books with longer paragraphs and learning about ancient history through myths and legends.

As a teacher, I love that the selection of books has a wide variety of reading levels. There are good choices for my reluctant readers, these books have more graphics and less words, but here are also challenging books. With these books, I'm teaching narrative writing in a new form. I use the Toon Graphics as mentor texts to write our own stories. Our traditional way of doing narratives is just to write and usually we don't illustrate. Students have a hard time writing. But, if we start by illustrating and creating story boards with Graphics, the narrative becomes alive. Students are much more aware about the difference between dialogue and descriptions. We are in the process of creating our own graphic stories!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Jimenez, Arlene

I teach kindergarten at a low-income school in downtown San Diego. We are a dual language academy with a 50/50 model. My classroom is composed of both English-only speakers and English language learners with the home language of Spanish. I teach Langauage Arts, social studies and science in Spanish to 26 students, then they go to their English teacher for Language Arts, math, and health in English. I then, teach another group of 26 students in Spanish. In total, I have 52 students that are willing to become fully bilingual in academic English and Spanish. They are well-spirited and come ready to learn everyday.
