At our High School, students have a 40-minute mentoring period during the day. This is a time when teachers and staff work to build relationships with the students and build trust so that we can all work together throughout the year. This is also a time when teachers help with academics, social-emotional skills, and community building. During this period, students can have snacks, chat with each other, and play educational games in order to get to know each other. With this project, students will be able to get to know each other through the team-building that comes from the interactive and educational games. I chose games that the students have requested for the mentoring time: Uno, Jenga, Chess, and others; these are games that all require teams or more than two players so that the students are encouraged to interact with each other. I have also asked for 10 cases of bottles of water for students to drink and healthy snacks like crackers and granola bars for the students to eat during the session. Students will also be able to focus more during the day with the snacks and the bottles of water, because of the fact that many students do not eat breakfast or eat anything until around 2:30 p.m. every day.
