First grade is probably the most important grade in a young reader's life. During this year a child can develop a love for reading that will last a lifetime - if the right books are available. Please help me provide those just right books to my students. Lots of time reading "easy" books makes learning to read easier and makes the reader feel successful. The books I am asking for are sets based on particular reading levels. I have chosen levels that almost every first grade reader will progress through during the year. I will place the books in baskets by level of difficulty. Students will be directed to choose books at their independent reading level. My students will then "shop" from the baskets to pick a book that interests them. At the independent level, the reader will still need to use strategies to read the book, but the child should feel success not frustration. Children will choose to have these leveled readers to independently practice skills taught in my guided reading lessons. They will use these books every day. Because they will be reading books they have chosen on their own, their interest level will be greater. Because these Guided Reading collections will be the correct level, my readers will think that learning to read is easy and will keep practicing.
